Military Persons
This table contains over 739,900 names of U.S. military war veterans.
The Table includes senior officers, down to regimental commanders and Navy officers who commanded ships in major battles, and also includes many famous lower ranking people, and over 3,000 of the Medal of Honor winners. But it also contains hundreds of thousands of the rank and file people who have fought, and particularly many who have died, in the nation's battles. A little basic information is included for all, and some biographical information is included for some.
The table makes no pretense of ever being complete in any respect. It is intended to be only somewhat representative. For the 20th Century wars, the major portion of the people included are those who gave their lives in battle, but many others are being added from the Department of Veterans Affairs list. For the Civil War, names were obtained largely from unit rosters in the National Park Service web site, so many who survived are also included. People at Lexington, The Alamo, Custer's Last Stand, the Maine, Pearl Harbor, and Doolittles's Raid are here. Some of those at Valley Forge and the Battle of Saratoga are here to help represent the American Revolution.
The table contains some duplications, especially for Civil War soldiers. Most of the latter are taken from the National Park Service list. This is a treasured resource, thanks largely to the volunteer efforts of thousands of people, but one of its characteristics is that it in many cases contains several spellings for the same person, (sometimes as many as 8 or 9 spellings that I've found of the same person's name). In the cases that I have noticed, I have included all of them and cross-referenced those that I thought were probably the same person. I know I have missed many different spellings that were actually the same person, and have probably cross-referenced quite a few that weren't the same person. Also, it appears that many persons are represented more than once because they served in more than one regiment.
