Military Organizations

This table lists over 37,000 US (including Confederate) military organizations. For some, little or no information is provided (many show only that it participated in WW II or the Civil War). For many others, quite a bit of battle history is included. Histories for some units are being expanded, but are far from complete. For most currently active units, that status is noted, and for many, their locations.

A query of what units participated in Operation Torch (invasion of North Africa in WW II) would yield a pretty comprehensive list. The same is true of Operation Husky (Invasion of Sicily in WW II), and the Battle of Midway. The same is also true for several of the major battles of the Civil War, including Gettysburg.

Former Army Air Corps units are generally shown as Air Force units for the sake of continuity. However, there are exceptions, and I'm sure I haven't been consistent. Many support units, such as quartermaster and MP companies, are shown as Army units even though known to have served with 8th Air Force during World War II, for example.
