Ships

The Ships table contains over 45,000 records of U.S. ships and other vessels, including Navy, Coast Guard and Army ships, as well as a number of other U.S. vessels that have participated in wars. This represents about 37,000 different vessels. Some are listed two or more times because they were identified by more than one name and/or type and/or hull number. Many are listed under more than one, if not all, of the identifications under which they were known during their active period with US forces. Separate entires for the same vessel are cross-referenced to each other. The table is mostly Navy vessels, but also includes several thousand Army vessels, many of which are small and seldom listed in other sources, and a great many commercial vessels, including Liberty ships and Victory ships used during World War II.

Ships are not separately listed under names used before and after US Navy, Coast Guard and Army service (except some commercial vessels converted to Naval service during WW II), but other names of those ships are usually shown in the History and Notes field of the records.
